An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 7.9 struck Indonesia on Wednesday, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake was recorded about 33 miles from Padang, the capital city of West Sumatra, which is home to more than 800,000 people.
Several buildings were damaged, Metro TV reported. People were seen running out of their homes and toward the hills.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration issued a tsunami watch for Indonesia, India, Thailand and Malaysia.
NOAA could not immediately say whether the quake generated a tsunami, but such advisories are issued when a quake has the potential to cause one. On Tuesday, a magnitude 8.0 quake -triggered tsunami killed at least 84 in the Samoan islands and Tonga.

Tsunami strikes at Samoan Island late tuesday or our local time at 6:00pm (Malaysian Time). A huge emergency effort is under way in the Samoan Islands after towering tsunami waves triggered by an 8.0 earthquake left dozens dead and entire villages flattened or submerged. Various area in Malaysia like Serdang, Petaling Jaya, Selangor Malaysia have signal of earthquake for those resided in high rise office building, apartments, condominium and etc.
However, I don't think Tsunami will hit us who live in Kuala Lumpur or Peninsular Malaysia which is protected by Sumatera (Indonesia) and Borneo (Sabah & Sarawak). However, for those who is happily enjoy their holidays in famous beach areas in Taiwan, Japan, Philiphines, Sabah Malaysia will be more cautious as the Tsunami waves is very great like what we sufferred in 2004.
The 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami killed over 300,000 people with many bodies either being lost to the sea or unidentified. Some unofficial estimates have claimed that approximately 1 million people may have died directly or indirectly solely as a result of the tsunami. According to an article in Geographical magazine (April 2008), the Indian Ocean tsunami of December 26, 2004 was not the worst that the region could expect. The first waves hits India then Sri Lanka, and the tsunami waves never rest and hit to South East Asia where Sumatra Indonesia and Phuket Island and several other islands in Thailand were badly hit by the Tsunami.
Readers please remind your friends who is leisuring or plan to holiday in the beach to evacuate yourselve or postpones your trip as soon as possible to prevent this tradegy happen.
